Wow, it’s been over a year since I posted on the main blog here, so I wanted to give everyone an update of what’s been happening here at the Skeptical Christian and what the plans are for the future.
New Content
There are a few content pieces I added long ago but never updated here. They include;
Other Projects
I’ve been doing a number of other projects for my Church and other ventures recently. I co-taught a class on the Creation vs. Evolution debate. You can check out a quick website and podcast I threw together for the project at
hopevalecreationclass.com
And I am currently co-teaching a youth group study on apologetics, with a website and podcast at
hopevaledeeperclass.com
Finally, I was invited to participate in the apologetics essay series by Brian Auten over at Apologetics 315. My Essay just got published there. Thanks Brian!
Future Plans
I am trying to update the website, I would like to switch over to a Wordpress blog and want to implement some design changes and content updates. This is taking longer than anticipated and it’s the main reason I haven’t been keeping you updated here. I plan to soon get the update launched and get back on the podcasting circuit. Thanks everyone for your support, it’s much appreciated.
In Christ,
Kyle.

I almost forgot to mention…I finally got a new podcast episode up! This one continues on with the doctrine of God, this time looking at the doctrine of creation. There’s also lots of other good stuff in the episode, including a bunch of news items, a reader question about the Molinist view of sovereignty, and reviews of some books dealing with the Arminian/Calvinist debate.
Coming up, I’m hoping to round off the doctrine of God series with some truly controversial topics, discussing the Trinity and the Incarnation. Stay tuned!
Also, some listeners have noted that the switch to an enhanced podcast, which apparently requires M4a files, has caused some difficulty with their mp3 players. I’m trying to figure out a way to resolve this issue, because I want to make sure the podcast works for everyone. I might have to pull the enhanced features out. My other option is to create separate feeds for the ‘regular’ and ‘enhanced’ version of the podcast. This would be a slight pain, but if many of you actually enjoy/use the enhanced features of the show, I’d be more than willing to take the extra steps.
17 March 2009
A while back I was a guest on the Apologia podcast, this one was on “The Problems with Theism.” This episode, to the best of my knowledge, was just recently posted at the new website. Good stuff- thanks to Danny Schade for hosting the episode, and to Dan Sawyer for challenging all my points, just like always!
2 January 2009
Whew, that was a nightmare! After a day of hacking and tinkering with my feed, I believe I’ve managed to get the podcast up and running once again. I hope I did not lose any subscribers in the process. If you have been lost, please resubscribe (you can use the link in the right column to subscribe via iTunes.) I believe the RSS feed for the podcast is also working, but I’m not entirely sure if everything is shipshape. Please let me know if there are any problems or difficulties.
On a brighter note, I took the chance to make some big improvements to the podcast. Previously, I was restricted by a number of limitations when it came to editing my feed, but now I have complete control. As a result, everything should be named, formatted, and tagged correctly. The feed is looking a lot better in iTunes already.
I also reduced the file sizes for the podcast substantially. They should download much quicker now and shouldn’t take up nearly as much space.
Finally, I have turned The Skeptical Christian Podcast into an enhanced show! Enhanced podcasts offer a number of features, but the primary advantage is that they allow the addition of chapters. I have put chapter markers on all the shows now (NOTE: I think that these are only viewable in iTunes, iPods, and Quicktime. However, if the chapters aren’t viewable it’s not really a big deal- you can still listen to the episode the normal way.) In the most recent show (episode 18), I added even further improvements, providing links to the news stories and book reviews. Let me know if you like these additions.
If you like to hold on to all the episodes of the show and you are a current subscriber, you may just want to delete your subscription and then resubscribe. Everything is a lot cleaner now, plus the file sizes are more manageable.
Thanks for your patience and your support, and let me know if there is anything I can do to make the Skeptical Christian website and podcast a better resource for you. Happy New Years!
31 December 2008
I’ve run into a flurry of technical problems with the podcast, which apparently cannot be downloaded currently. I’m working to resolve these issues and your patience is appreciated. When I release the podcast again, it should feature a number of improvements that I hope you all enjoy. Until then, thanks for your support.

Today is Blog Action Day, where bloggers everywhere are discussing the issue of poverty. This is a topic that I am passionate about, though I have not yet posted anything about it here on the site (but be sure to check out my article, 5 Ways the Web Can Help Us Eliminate Poverty, on my business blog). I think poverty is a serious ethical issue, and as such we have a strong obligation to fight against this problem. Extreme poverty is not only disastrous but also solvable- God has provided the resources we need to eliminate it. Yet, in our consumerist culture, we have turned a blind eye to our neighbors and have indulged in unneeded luxury. Even the Church has fallen into this trap- spending millions on fancy church buildings. Moreover, Christians hardly stand out from the crowd when it comes to consumerism- Christians with money are just about as likely as anybody to spend that money on unneeded luxuries while children around the world literally starve to death.
I think Christ called us to a higher standard. His care and concern for the poor and marginalized comes through on every page of the Gospels. Consider Luke 12:33-
“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”
Whether you are a follower of Christ or not, however, the ethical consequences of extreme poverty should be clear. I wrote an article on this issue a year ago, so for my contribution to blog action day, I’d like to repost that here. Unfortunately, I was limited to 1,500 words, so I was not able to fully develop all of my arguments. I will try to offer a more comprehensive review of this argument in the Ethics section at a later date. But without further ado, here is my essay on A Poverty of Benevolence: The Moral Obligations of the Affluent:

Episode 18 of the podcast is available- I did this one on God and foreknowledge. This is the second episode in my series on the doctrine of God from a philosophical perspective.
In the book reviews section, I recently uploaded the companion volumes Why I am Not an Arminian by Robert Peterson and Michael Williams, and Why I am Not a Calvinist by Jerry Walls and Joseph Dongell.

29 August 2008
Be sure to check out the recent apologia blog for a discussion on the nature of free will. It’s an issue that I’ve been studying quite a bit as of late and I hope to write more on the topic in the near future.
Also have a new book review posted- Fabricating Jesus by Craig Evans. And for those who missed it, I’ve posted episode 17 of the podcast.

29 July 2008
I have 3 new book reviews uploaded; The Openness of God by William Hasker, John Sanders, Richard Rice, Clark Pinnock, and David Basinger, Divine Providence by Thomas Flint, and There is a God by Antony Flew.

I also added another feature on the home page. In the right hand column you can see a list of Digg stories that I have recently noticed. I tag stories purely on the basis of religious content, not on whether or not I endorse the opinion of the article. But hopefully this can help my readers stay on top of late-breaking news of interest to the thinking Christian.
On another note, I apologize for the dreaded spam that has infected this site. I am hoping to find a solution very soon to deal with this problem. For the time being, please bear with me. I will not delete any legitimate comments, and soon the spam should be cleared away, so don’t feel disinclined to comment on articles. Thank you for your patience.
4 July 2008
Unfortunately, I’ve been quite sick lately and therefore unable to record the 17th episode of the podcast. Hopefully should be up in the next couple of days. In the meantime, be sure to check out episode 16 of the show on Intelligent Design. Also new to the site, I have book reviews of Jesus Under Fire, Arminian Theology: Myths and Realities, and The Evidential Argument from Evil.
3 June 2008
I took part in the Apologia podcast discussion once more, and if you are interested head on over to the blog to check it out, or subscribe to their podcast. We discussed the Mind-Body problem and I did my best to defend the substance dualist view. That’s an issue that I haven’t had the chance to write about a great deal on this site, but hopefully I will soon because I find it endlessly fascinating.
April 29, 2008

Many people are probably already aware of the controversial documentary, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Starring Ben Stein, this film takes a look at the theory of Intelligent Design. It actually covers a variety of topics; including discrimination of ID theorists in the scientific community, criticisms of Darwinian evolution, and the supposed link between Darwinism and Nazism/eugenics.

Just wanted to update readers on a new addition to the website. I uploaded a paper that I wrote on the Teleological Argument for my philosophy of religions class. I have been working on a huge article providing a detailed defense of this argument for almost a year now, and with any luck that will be completed relatively soon. However, the paper provides a fairly extensive overview of the Teleological Arguments. Unfortunately, I vastly exceeded the page limit for the paper (with my professor’s permission), but I did not wish to make the paper any longer. Thus, some points were not as developed as I would have liked. In any case, you can get the paper here.
29 April 2008
I appeared once again on the apologia podcast. As usual, head over to the Apologia blog to check it out if you are interested. We primarily focused on the Problem of Evil in this week’s discussion. I should be recording my new podcast for the end of April coming up here, which will also cover the Problem of Evil. Enjoy!
9 April 2008
I was a guest in yet another podcast- this one called the Reason Driven Podcast- which is hosted by Danny Schade and Mikyle Lockwood. Danny and I have dialogued on the Apologia podcast previously, but he asked me to appear on this show a while back. The podcast follows the book by Robert Price called The Reason Driven Life, a response to Pastor Rick Warren’s bestseller The Purpose Driven Life. I am reading through both of these books currently and you can expect some reviews in the library soon.
In any case, I really enjoyed participating in this show. I responded to chapter 21 of Price’s book during the interview, but we ended up discussing a variety of issues- hell, evangelism, arguments for God’s existence, evidence for Christ’s resurrection, and a host of other topics.
Check out the blog and listen to the show at http://reasondriven.blogspot.com/. Hopefully I will be able to get to producing my own podcast (fingers crossed)- which should be up sometime this week. All the best.
3 April 2008
I once again took place in the Apologia podcast discussion – this time the issue was the arguments against God’s existence. Check it out at apologia-podcast.blogspot.com.
Once again it was a great discussion and I was glad to participate.
15 March 2008
I took place in a discussion on the Apologia podcast concerning the arguments for the existence of God. Check out the podcast at apologia-podcast.blogspot.com. I really enjoyed participating and I may be joining them in other conversations soon.

Hey, just wanted to write an update here to let everyone know what is going on behind the scenes here at the Skeptical Christian. The wonderful Steve Mckinney is helping me redesign the website with a new backend. The new site will have a cleaner look and much better functionality. I am currently working on porting all of my articles over to the new site, which also involves updating, checking grammar and spelling, and expanding on all the articles and reviews I have on the site. This is why updates have been sparse for the past couple months (though I have been doing a lot of reading; I’m currently working on 5 book reviews).
Another problem has been my audio setup for the podcast. I didn’t post one for the month of December because I have been having audio problems. I think I have figured out the problem, so I should be good to resume podcasts this month. Should have one up in the next few days, provided that the audio problems don’t return.
Finally, there has been some new content uploaded since I last wrote about updates. First of all, episode 12 of the podcast was a recording of a talk that I gave on the historical evidence for the resurrection, while episode 13 looked at the evolution of belief. Other than that, I have some more book reviews;
17 October 2007
It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned the new things going on here at The Skeptical Christian. I’ve been trying to keep up on the podcast, and I have 3 more episodes since the last update. Episode 9 covered personal experiences as a way of knowing God. Episode 10 was on the evils of Christianity. Episode 11 discussed a few arguments that Christians should not use. I’ve decided to make only one podcast per month now that school is in session (and I was already having trouble keeping up with two). You can expect a new podcast episode the last day of every month from now on.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately, and the library now contains reviews for the following books;
4 August 2007
Unfortunately, due to time constraints I was only able to post one podcast for July. I should be able to do two of them here in August. The most recent episode covered the Argument from the Meaning of Life.
It seems that I’ve been having some technical difficulties with the mailing list, consequently, I did not send out a newsletter for July and it seems that nobody is able to sign up for the service at this point. I am working on the problem to get it back in order, and I suspect that it will be fixed in time for this month’s newsletter.
I also have a new book review of Daniel Dennett’s popular book, Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon.

15 July 2007
I came across a hilarious parody of Richard Dawkins. Very funny, especially if you are familiar with Dawkins and his usual arguments.
July 14, 2007
Pope Benedict has recently released a statement which is causing quite a stir in the Christian community. See the news story here.
According to the article, the Pope released a document reaffirming his position that Protestant churches are only ecclesial communities that do not have the means of salvation.
For my reactions, read on…

Got podcast episode #7 posted finally, after a few setbacks. This one is a critique of Richard Dawkins’ book The God Delusion. Check out the podcast page to download the episode or subscribe to the podcast by clicking the link on the right column. Enjoy!
20 June 2007

There is quite a bit going on behind the scenes here, but for now I have a new book review for Resurrected? An Atheist and Theist Dialogue by Gary Habermas and Antony Flew.
I haven’t yet mentioned the last two podcasts; episode 5 covered the Argument from Nonbelief and episode 6 discussed the Teleological Argument. The first podcast for June should be coming up very soon.
14 May 2007
I recently wrote a piece on one of Richard Dawkins’ primary arguments found in his book The God Delusion. I originally wanted to do a full critique of this book, but I don’t think that the book has enough substantive content, so I will probably just write a series of brief articles where I address Dawkins’ most important points.
I also just finished reading Victor Stenger’s new book, God: The Failed Hypothesis. Check the link for a review. Hopefully I will write up a thorough critique of Stenger in the next couple of weeks.

20 April 2007
A while ago (mid-March) I uploaded two articles on ethics, one concerning birth control and the other about embryonic stem cell research.
We also have two new podcast episodes. Episode 3 is about the “God-of-the-Gaps” objection, and Episode 4, uploaded yesterday, addresses the question ‘do extraordinary events require extraordinary evidence.’ I have also been adding full transcripts of the podcasts along with links and references for documentation and further research. Enjoy!
7 March 2007
I haven’t really advertised it much yet, but I have started a podcast associated with this site. There are currently two episodes; the first covers the importance of apologetics and the meaning of faith, and the second covers the cosmological argument. Click the podcast page in the main navigation to see a list of the episodes. If you have questions that you would like to have addressed in the podcast, please email them to me or post a comment on the podcast page. I would also be grateful for any feedback you have on the show. Thanks!

A book review for Lee Strobel’s The Case for a Creator has been posted in the library.
There is also a new feature here at the Skeptical Christian- check out the Digg Profile. This is a place where I will keep track of stories and videos that deal with Christianity, religion, and other important issues. These stories are not necessarily endorsed- they are only provided so that you can keep up to date on the most recent news. I will be commenting on the most interesting articles here on the site.
January 30, 2007
In a recent article in Time Magazine, also posted on the Internet and becoming a front page news story at Digg.com, Steven Pinker argues that consciousness is merely activity in the brain. In the article, Pinker denies the existence of a soul and the possibility of an afterlife. However, Pinker’s case is remarkably weak once analyzed with a marginal degree of philosophical rigor.
Read on for my response….

A new book review of The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis has just been posted in the library.
3 January 2007
I have a new article responding to a piece on the Secular Web by Michael Martin. Martin’s article is called The Gap in Theistic Arguments. In the article he tries to show that all theistic arguments (such as the Cosmological Argument or the Argument from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ) have a hole in them because they don’t actually establish theism. In my response I try to show that Martin fails to define “theism” correctly and fails to take other factors into consideration.
2 December 2006
I recently uploaded a new article called The Evolution of Belief? in which I analyze claims from people like Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett about the evolutionary origin of religion. In the article I also analyze what I call The Argument from the Prevalence of Religion. According to this argument, the fact that almost everybody has believed in God is evidence that God Himself designed us with a propensity to believe.
I also have a new book review of A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis. Plus, I am expanding my Critics of Christianity feature; new additions are Dan Barker and Michael Martin.
30 November 2006
I have uploaded some new material recently. Over this last month I have read some of the most popular atheist literature which has come out in the last year or so. Richard Dawkins, the famous evolutionist and atheist, has released a best seller entitled The God Delusion, which is the new featured book review. Sam Harris has gained fame for his recent works The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation. In addition to this, I have continued reading C.S. Lewis, and I have a new book review on his book The Problem of Pain.
Also, I have decided to start consolidating some of my material on certain critics of Christianity. On the right column of the Refutation page, I have a drop-down menu which lists some of the most outspoken critics of Christianity. I have a biography of each critic, as well as links to responses to that person both on this site and around the web. For starters I have pages on Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and George H. Smith. I will be working on expanding this feature a great deal in the near future, adding material on all of these critics and adding a slew more, including guys like Michael Martin, Dan Barker, and Daniel Dennett. I want this site to become a one-stop place to find detailed responses to today’s most relevant non-Christians.
2 November 2006
I started up another series recently, where I review podcasts that are relevant to Christianity and apologetics. The podcasts up so far are:
I also have two new book reviews, both by C.S. Lewis:
9 August 2006
We have made a few changes around here recently. The top banner was changed and we have a new recommended article, book, and website on the right column. The biggest new feature is the Skeptical Mailing List- just enter your email address on the right to receive monthly apologetics email updates.
I am starting to expand my debate review series- for now I have a debate on the existence of God between William Lane Craig and Corey Washington (see Here). I have also started up a series on the Argument from Nonbelief.
In the Library, I have two new book reviews: The Kalam Cosmological Argument by William Lane Craig and Four Views on Salvation by a collaboration of authors.
Also, I have just completed a side project that I’ve been working on for a little bit. I constructed a web site for my friend Robbie and his new band, Iamthebranch. This is the same Robbie who gave a talk on “Thanksgiving” in the ACTS videos, and who also leads the worship band at the local college ministry that I attend. The site is located at iamthebranch.com, so when you get some free time, head on over there and listen to some good music.
19 June 2006
I wrote a review of the Craig/Ehrman debate Here. It is part of a new series that I am starting in which I will write reviews of debates both online and in print.
10 June 2006
A new debate transcript is now available, and it is making quite a splash on the Internet. It is a debate on the Resurrection of Christ between Craig and Ehrman, and it can be found here.
I might write a brief commentary on the debate in the near future.
17 April 2006
I have 4 new book reviews.
–
Three Views on Creation and Evolution (Paul Nelson, John Mark Reynolds, Robert Newman, and Howard Van Til)
–
Four Views on Hell (John Walvoord, William Crockett, Zachary Hayes, and Clark Pinnock)
–
The Case for Faith (Lee Strobel)
–
Darwin’s Black Box (Michael Behe)
11 April 2006
I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading lately, and for right now I have 3 new book reviews available. I should have 3 more up in a couple of days. What I have so far:
–
Does God Exist? (Debate between William Craig and Antony Flew)
–
The Case for Christ (Lee Strobel)
–
What About Those Who Have Never Heard? (John Sanders, Ronald Nash, and Gabriel Fackre)
I also happened upon a little flash animation game called “Dembski’s Dozer,” inspired by the Intelligent Design Movement. It is absolutely hilarious. Check it out Here.
5 April 2006
Alright, well I have decided to release my series on the Problem of Evil even though it is very incomplete. I am currently working on two more articles to add to this series. For now, what’s new is a critique of George H. Smith’s response to the PofE Here. This supplements my now complete response to Smith’s book Atheism: The Case against God, located Here. New for this update is my response to the first chapter of the book, as well as a conclusion, complete with recommended further reading.
I also have a brief book review for God and Design Here.
31 March 2006
Over this past week I worked on and finished a response to John Mackie’s critique of the Cosmological Argument in his book “The Miracle of Theism.” (See Here) This is part of my recently created series on the Kalam Cosmological Argument.
I also uploaded my critique of George H. Smith’s “Atheism: The Case against God” second chapter, available here, and fourth chapter, available here.
27 March 2006
This last weekend I went on a Christian retreat with the college ministry that I am involved with. The pastor who spoke talked about making sacrifices for Christ and allowing the Spirit to improve the quality of our Christian lives. I had a great time, but taking the entire weekend off caused me to fall behind on homework. It may be a couple days before I can get the next article up, but I’ll try to make some time for it.
23 March 2006
I have a new section up, Media. I uploaded four videos that I helped make for my church.
20 March 2006
I am now starting a series that defends the Cosmological Argument. (See Here) It gathers together some of my material in response to particular writings as well as some forum discussion, but I also have two new critiques available as of yet; one on Dan Barker and one on Michael Martin.
I hope to start some similar series on some other issues, including the Problem of Evil, Argument from Nonbelief, and eventually the Teleological Argument. If you have a suggestion for a series, feel free to comment.
I am currently working on a comprehensive defense of the Teleological Argument. Due to school, however, this will probably not be completed for at least a couple of weeks.
We are also working on some site improvements. Recent articles are now automatically posted on the right column. We made some slight changes to the homepage. Also upcoming is a media section with some videos and audio files. More on that later.
20 February 2006
The notion that Christianity is based on a “leap of faith” rather than an intellectual commitment of mind and soul to God is widespread in today’s culture. Christians are unable to provide a rational defense of their faith, and nonbelievers are convinced that religion is something only for the gullible and weak-minded. At The Skeptical Christian, these problems are addressed head on. Christianity is NOT a worldview for the weak-minded and it is NOT based on a blind leap of faith.
The Skeptical Christian was designed with discussion in mind. Any article on this site can be commented on, and any suggestions, critiques, or alternative perspectives on any of the writings are welcomed and encouraged. Feel free to participate in the discussion of these important topics.
This site is separated into several sections. In “Theism,” rational arguments are used to establish a foundation for belief in God. Some important articles here include The Cosmological Argument, and Defining God. For a treatment on the foundation of “faith” in God, see Personal Experiences. This section also includes articles on the importance of religion and worldview for every individual. Some good treatments include The Argument from the Meaning of Life and Pascal’s Suggestion.
In the “Atheism” section, arguments against Christianity and the existence of God are criticized. This includes an extensive analysis of the The Problem of Evil. Another important argument, The Argument from Nonbelief is addressed in this section. Many people claim that it is unproductive to claim that God is the cause of some phenomenon, and this common argument is considered in the article, The God-of-the-Gaps. The claim that Christianity in general and Christians in particular are responsible for great evil is shown to be a non-argument in the essay Evil Christianity.
The “Refutation” section consists of responses to a variety of non-Christian writings, both scholarly and popular. Many of these articles are helpful supplements to other writings on this site; for example, the Rebuttal of Plugaru reinforces some concepts defended in the Argument from Nonbelief and the Rebuttal of Martin strengthens the arguments found in the Problem of Evil.
The “Library” includes over 50 book reviews, including material that is pro-Christian, anti-Christian, and neutral. For some solid Christian apologetics, check out Scaling the Secular City and Reasonable Faith. Some interesting non-Christian readings include Atheism: The Case against God and What is Atheism?. Two great debates are God? and Jesus’ Resurrection.
In the “Debates” section there are debates and discussions with non-Christians. I have an ongoing correspondence with Brian Holtz, as well as catalogs of several past debates. This section also contains links to several forum discussions in which I participated significantly.
The “Ethics” section contains articles discussing important moral issues of our day. This section currently has an article on the moral status of abortion. This section will be expanded quite a bit in the near future.
Finally, I have added a “Media” section, where I will post video projects and audio files of talks that I have given. Check out the ACTS Videos for a sample of these upcoming projects.
