Richard Dawkins
28 November 2006Who is Richard Dawkins?
Richard Dawkins is a well-known British evolutionary biologist and atheist apologist who holds the Charles Simonyi Chair in the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University.
What Does He Have to Say?
A prolific author, Dawkin’s has been a long-time defender of evolution and critic of religion. His books include The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker, and Climbing Mount Improbable. These books, like most of his work, focus on evolutionary theory and attempt to undercut the Argument from Design. However, he has recently authored a book more directly critical of religion and Christianity, entitled The God Delusion.
In The God Delusion Dawkins claims that belief in God is exceedingly improbable, because evolution explains the apparent design of creatures and any Creator who could create the universe would be extraordinarily complex. He also tries to refute other arguments for God’s existence though, in my view, he fails to deal with the best and most relevant arguments. In the book Dawkins also claims that religion is the cause of much harm, and thus should be criticized.
Dawkins also tries to explain the existence of religious beliefs with evolutionary explanations, a project which is, in my view, both unimpressive and useless.

You’re a great essayist. There are, however, some flaws in your essays. You use an informal voice, constantly saying “I” but never establish your ethos, other than being a skeptic towards skeptical thinkers. So who are you really?
